Puerta del Sol. Tio Pepe!
A yarn shop, of course. Not too impressive in its selection, but I love the way it is displayed by fiber, weight and color. You choose from what is available and a friendly clerk will go into a back room and get the quantity you want.
I love a quaint little nursery tucked into a big city.
The cheese shop where I got Josh's stinky Cabrales blue cheese. Awesome shopping experience--selecting, weighing, packaging, and getting exactly what I wanted!
Puerta del Sol, the city's hub. Our guide called it Spain's Time's Square.
Plaza Major--in hindsight, I could have saved most of my shopping for this plaza and the surrounding streets.
Suckling Pig (cochinillo)--awww! It is proudly displayed in the refrigerated display case of a restaurant.

Toledo

"Old Toledo" is encircled by the Targus River. The city retains its medieval road plan, with twisty streets, and is a tourist and shopping mecca in central Spain.
Italy celebrates its popes, Spain its priests. Nuns in their habits are a common sight.
Lovely handmade lace from the region now graces my table.

Burgos

Puerta de Santa Maria, the gateway into the medieval northern castilian city that is dominated by the 13th century gothic cathedral, Catedral de Burgos.

Bilbao

We went to Bilbao to visit Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum. You can see the Arcos Rojos over the bridge leading to the museum. Bilbao, the largest city in the Basque country, is industrial and modern. It has become an art destination. Even the graffiti is colorful and looks like modern art. I wish I could have gotten a photo of the graffiti.
Bilbao was unlike any other city we visited. There was a large police presence and we had to register all of our passports at the hotel.

Covadonga

Covadonga is situated along Picos de Europa, a mountain range in the region of Austurias. It was well worth the drive to visit this little chapel that was built into a cave in the mountainside.
The basilica in Covadonga stands out against backdrop. An historic victory in this town over the Moors turned the tide and marked the beginning of the reconquest in Spain.
Not noticeable at first, this little fountain sits near the base of the waterfall. The tastiest food on the trip was roasted wild boar and fresh baked bread from a little restaurant in this little town.

Leon

Leon Cathedral is known for its original stained glass, added to the structure every decade since the 1200s.
Leon is a picturesque city. Why can't old always look beautiful?

They really wear these hats, young and old alike, but mostly old.
Leon Cathedral was build in the 12th century. These buildings are not just monuments. They are still used daily for masses and sometimes community activities.
All the adults were invited into the bar next to the school for a beer and tapas. It makes me smile.At the school, we were served a typical regional meal. Salad is served with the meal, crispy lettuce with tomatoes and green olives.
Bread and red wine come with everything. Some small restaurants set out complimentary pitchers of red wine.

This hearty meal, cocido, is the regional specialty, sausage, beef, and pork cooked in a broth with potatoes, hominy and cabbage. The blood sausage and hunk of pork fat aside. the meal was delicious.

Galiza

Evident regional identification, especially in Galicia, Asturias and the Basque region. The people identify with the region first.

Santiago de Compostella

This is it, the pilgrim's destination. Legend has it the the remains of Saint James were discovered here, so the cathedral was built here in his honor.
Like our Pacific Northwest, the region gets a lot of rain. I love the mossy facades.
In case you're at the market and need a pig's face for dinner!
I love the tidy, colorful little outdoor markets. Look how the strawberries are arranged.
Wow! I never thought I would try foods like these. Zamburinas al horno are scallops. Good!
Percebes, an expensive local delicacy. We call them barnacles. Weird rubbery texture and taste like saltwater, but delicate and delicious.
Navajas a la plancha--razor clams. Raw they look like snot hanging from the shells. Cooked they firm up. Interesting but very gritty.
What a surprise to hear bagpipes! Galicia has Celtic roots. Their bagpipes are called the gaita.
We had good bonding experiences in our group of travelers.
Beautiful children everywhere are cherished by their families and communities. They dress them so cute!
I love the view of the cathedral across the tile rooftops.

Salamanca

Why Salamanca was my favorite city: it bustles with life, families, children. This family was on their way to the church for the baby's baptism when I asked if I could take a photograph. The mother graciously paused for the picture.

Salamanca recalls the old men strolling in Plaza Major. Round and round they went, at a leisurely pace, talking with their friends. There were also groups of women friends, and many young families.Just like the guidebooks say, people meet and walk about the square, the Plaza Major--THE place to socialize regularly with friends. These ladies were trying politely to get out of my picture, not knowing they were the picture.
Such a cool feature of Salamanca--storks nest on the rooftops. Look carefully and you will see two storks atop this tower. The city tries to keep the birds off the old buildings as the weight of the birds and nests can cause rooftops and structures to collapse. You will see huge bird-be-gones on some structures. Imagine the mess.
Casa de las Conchas, House of Shells, was the home of a university professor who belonged to the Order of Santiago and decorated the building with 350 scallop shells, the symbol of Santiago, as a monument to Santiago de Compostela.
Salamanca is known as the "Golden City" due to its golden glow of its sandstone buildings. The University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain, dating back to 1218.

Salamanca's new cathedral built in 1513 (next to the old cathedral from 1100) boasts this astronaut carved into its face. When the building was restored in 1992, an artist added the astronaut as a symbol of the 20th century.

This man typifies the older men in the small towns with his hat and cane. This one was looking for a few Euros.
The gypsies, in postures of supplication, stayed out of they way and were typically seen around busy cathedrals.

Avila

The city wall around Avila is build on fortifications started by the Romans and Muslims.
Cute little ladies go about their chores. This one pushed a cart and carried a big bag alternately, stopping and switching every block, taking her market goods home.

Josh's BSN Pinning Ceremony at SDSU
Mom joined us for the week to celebrate with Josh.
She was thrilled that Josh asked her to pin him during the ceremony. She was a little nervous but did a great job.

Josh took two high honors.
Omkara joined us in the celebration and came back to the house and joined us for a meal. I can't even think of the last time we all sat down together. It was a treat.
All back together.
We got to include Nonny Sue and René.
It was nice to see Josh's other nursing friends, like Tess. It was funny to see people come up to Jeremy and say he must be Joshua's twin. Many had heard about but not met him. Rashida was happy. She will graduate next semester.
One of the highlights was to see Ashley graduate, as well. Josh and Ashley were so happy!

We also got to meet Ashley's family.

Summer's Past

Linda had a booth at Summer's Past Craft and Antique Fair at Summer's Past Farms the first weekend of December. She was so brave to put her hand painted items out for others to peruse and purchase. She ended up culling more than a third of her finished objects! The rest of us met her in her booth. What a wonderful way to start the holiday mood!

Winter Formal

My niece, the divine Ms. J, accompanied me to our school's Winter formal this year. She's a lovely young lady! Only in 8th grade but blended right in with the high schoolers.
We were out on December 5th, Nonny Sue's 78th birthday. I got to wear my clapotis again. It was actually cold enough for it in La Jolla on that drizzly night. In fact, it was chilliest inside the restaurant.
It was the same night I had a blow out on the freeway in the dark and was saved by my good husband.
Truly a night to remember.

Pumpkin Pancakes

Sharon had all of us over for pumpkin pancakes this morning. Thank you, Sharon!
Josh went with us. Jeremy and René met us there, and her parents joined us, too. The surprise visitor was Evan!
The young muscleman came in dressed in his black leather motorcycle gear. I didn't even recognize him at first. He has only two more weeks in San Diego then he's off to a new assignment in Maryland. He'll drive his truck with his motorcycle in the bed. Ask him to show you the awesome picture (on a web site) of him riding on Mt. Palomar. It's enough to make a mother's heart quake!
Suzanne's husband and boys joined us for a while before they picked up Collin and Devon to go frisbee golfing.

My girlfriend, Jacquie stayed with us and helped with breakfast. She's looking so much like Sharon! Isn't she beautiful? Her disposition is as bright as her bedroom. We left in time to get Josh to the airport so he could get to Vegas to spend the weekend with Ashley's family. It was certainly a meeting the parents weekend!

San Francisco

We just met for our annual Girls' Weekend. This year was my pick--San Francisco. First we all met at Mom's house in San Jose.

We were greeted by Justin and Cory who surprised everyone with a photo like this taken in Vegas. Just kidding!

On the way in to the city, I finally got to go to Imagiknit, which met my expectations for a wonderful yarn shop. I bought some lovely Koigu and Habu yarn

I told an employee that I had heard about Imagiknit by listening to Nicole and Jenny on the "Stash and Burn" podcast. Because of their passionate discussion of patterns and yarns, I actually wanted to knit something. Imagine my surprise when she told me she thought one of them was in the next room. Not one but both! They were wonderful to talk with (and sound just like they do through my earbuds). They were also gracious enough to pose for a picture with me! Thank you Nicole and Jenny!

We had a lot of fun shopping for jewelry along the Embarcadero and in front of Ghiradelli Square.

Sonja was our favorite dealer . . . I mean jewel seller. She only gets to sell when she doesn't have too much work at the laundry. After what seemed an hour at her table, she gave us deals and provided outstanding service, adding chain to necklaces on the spot. She let Mom sit in her chair because we were such good customers.

Lori brought the craft this year, altered art using dad's first communion photo as the base. We each made our own version of an altered art pendant.
Mom worked on hers late into the night-oh wait . . . Sharon just crashed early.

We had fun eating in the various colorful neighborhoods. Gary Danko for a 5-star dinner. Outstanding! Tadich Grill had very yummy sour, chewy sourdough bread but forgettable meals. Caffe Roma for breakfast and delicious coffee. Great!

The Jack o' Lantern on the counter of Columbus Cafe helped to usher in the season.

I gave Mom an ipod nano for an early birthday present so she can listen to my favorite podcasts!

It's hard to believe we've done this now for 13 years. Thank you, Jeff, for suggesting our annual get-together!

Highlight of Palm Springs

During a three day trip to Palm Springs during the first week of August, the highlight was taking the aerial tram to the top of the mountain.

The elevation of the upper terminal is 8,516 feet. The distrance traveled is approximately 12,800 ft. with a vertical ascent of 5,873 ft and takes only about 15 minutes.

I was well over 100 degrees in the valley and probably about 70 degrees at the top.

Happy birthday to my guys. I wish you were here so I would not have to rely on words and photos to impart the experience. Here's what we did this morning . . .

Oh, my gosh! An incredible malasada from Agnes' Portuguese Bakeshop in Kailua. A portuguese donut--slightly crunchy on the outside and soft and a bit chewy on the inside. Dangerous!
Later in the day, we went to Kailua Beach Park for swimming and bobbing in the ocean.

Kailua is the quintessential beach town. The beach seems to go on for miles and is noted for kayaking, swimming, wind-surfing. How do you define that color between the blue water and the beach?
Lanikai is an exclusive little beach community just south of Kailua. Obama and his family spent Christmas here. Homes go right to the beach, but the public still has beach access (the tide kept people out today).

Ko'olaus

I love drama of driving right through the Ko'olau Mountain Range, an incredibly steep range. Driving from Kailua, the east side . . .

through the tunnel and only 15 miles to the west side of the island, to "the city."

Tonight we went to another memorable dinner in the city. After reading about the goodwill this man sows, I have a lot of respect to "the chef," as all the workers in the restaurant refer to Alan Wong.

Annually he prepares a feast for the farmers on the Big Island who provide fresh produce for his restaurants. He also goes into elementary schools, does demonstrations for the kids and talks to them about the importance of staying in school and learning so they can have opportunities.

We love Hilo Homemade Ice Cream. I had likikoi-mango sorbet. Jeff had ginger ice cream. Delicious!

Hawaiians love shaved ice. We saw this unique ice dispenser on a refrigerator on sale at Sears in Prince Kuhio Plaza.

Today was a rest and enjoy the Honeymoon Cottage day. We've done a lot of research on Hilo in preparation for our day trip tomorrow. Here's a picture of yarn I bought yesterday at the Hawaiian Homestead Farmer’s Market outside Wailea. It was handspun and dyed by Jan Dean of Hawaiian Homegrown Wool Co. She and her family raise Romney sheep on their farm on the Hamakua coast.

On another note, when we got back to Holualoa, it rained for almost three straight hours. During that rainfall, it rained at times harder than I have ever experienced. It is wonderul.

South Point

Today we went to South Point, the southernmost point of the USA.
Jeff loves this place.

We had a great day. Someone had spelled out "South Point" with coral on the lava rocks, like they graffiti the lava zones.

The Montego Bay Scarf got aired aired out. If dropped (God forbid!) it would be lost forever in the Antarctic current.

We drove around the other side of the Volcano park to view the Pu`u `O`o vent. It created terrible vog through the southern part of the island.

While in Hawaii, I challenged myself to eat mainly fresh fish for dinner. Last night we had an excellent dinner at Huggo's of grey snapper over grilled Maui onions.
Tonight we ate at Keei's Cafe (ke-ay's).

We had fresh Mahi-Mahi with red curry sauce. Again . . . delicious.

We got our gear and headed to the beach where we found such a great variety of fish last time. We were not disappointed. (Do you see my knitting?)
Look, a honu right at the shore.

This time were were prepared with rash guards, which kept our backs from getting sunburnt.

After we got coffee at Holualoa, a lady offered us apple bananas. They are short and a bit more tart. Yum! (What you don't see is the mosquitos sqarming around his legs.)

We went to Lulu's in Kailua-Kona to relive the great memory. Why does the second time around never match that first magical moment?

Yard Renovation

After the Carrotwood tree was cut down and the stump ground, we still couldn't plant in the front yard because it was almost solid roots on the side where the tree was. After lots of picking, chopping, digging and two busted water lines, we finally got the roots all dug up.

Jeff came up with the idea of another Pygmy Date Palm instead of another tree. I planted dymondia where grass had been. I filled in with annuals for nice summer color.

On the other side, my succulents are doing well.

Knit a Lifeline

Knitpicks Options Interchangeable needles make it so easy to run a lifeline in your knitting. I am demonstrating on my Montego Bay Scarf. First you thread a length of dental floss through the hole in the metal join on the cable.

Then just knit the row, pulling the floss through with the yarn.

When the row is completed, pull the floss through, letting it hang out on each end. If you need to frog your fabric, the unraveling will stop at the lifeline.

Mom's Weekend

Mom came to visit. She flew to Sharon's where she stayed from Tuesday through Friday. We picked her up from Sharon's Friday, and she stayed with us Friday night through the weekend. Look how cute she is at 77 years old.
Saturday we went to yarn shops. We drove up to Encinitas to Common Threads, but, unfortunately, it was closed. We then went to Needlecraft Cottage in Pacific Beach. We had a lot of fun looking at yarn and patterns and talking to the young gal who was working in the shop. Mom bought some yarn to make the Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf. She bought both of us a skein of Malabrigo lace yarn to make the Montego Bay Scarf.
I helped mom set up a Ravelry page. Check it out (if you have an account). Her user ID is msyaninek. I took pictures of her stash, created favorites, a queue, and projects. She will upload updates to her projects. It's fun to share this interest with her. We got started on both scarves before she went back to San Jose. Here's her multidirectional, using Knit One Crochet Too Ty-Dy Socks.

Sunday we went to dinner at The Fishery. Jeff won with an outstanding fish taco plate. I would go back just for that chipotle salsa!

Tonalita's Boxed Sweater--I saw it made at my local yarn shop, liked the feel and colors, and thought it looked easy to knit. I bought 9 skeins of Trendsetter's Tonalita and started knitting it during the break of Christmas 2008. I ripped and knitted each piece until I got it right. I learned how to increase and decrease and, most importantly, how to pick up stitches. When I was stitching the parts together, I realized the sleeves were too narrow, way to narrow. Look how small the upper arms are!

I frogged both sleeves and one front side (because I cut into it when I was taking out my seam stitches!). I will eventually get back to it because I don't like to leave things undone. I don't even like striped garments. Maybe some day I will wear it.

I started both scarves in February so I could work on them during my trip to Germany. The scarf hanging from the lamp is made of Noro Kureyon yarn. Inspired by Brooklyntweed, I used two multi-color yarns and alternated them in the striped pattern. I blocked it to just over 5 1/2 inches wide. The second, at 3 1/2 inches wide, is made of Noro Kureyon sock yarn. I had seen the Multidirectional Diagonal Scarf on Ravelry and decided to make it when I saw it at Two Sisters and Ewe made with sock yarn. It's made with short rows in garter stitch. It reminds me of a bright flower garden.

from dream to reality

Jeff visualized turning the deck into a sun room and thought about it for years. He finally did it. He took out the sliding door into the bedroom and expanded the opening.

He replaced the sliding door into the living room with french doors.

It feels so spacious. At night from the bedroom I love seeing the twinkly lights all the way down to TJ.

The remodel is finally complete. Almost. Here are some pics that show the new bamboo floor, the sun room where the deck used to be, and the new furniture.

Note the two new closets in the corner.
